Charles Yates Center
for Children & Families

With degrees in both chemical engineering and law,
Charles B. Yates devoted 10 years of his life to public service as a member of the New Jersey State Senate and Assembly. He chaired the Joint Appropriations Committee and Joint Legislative Committee on Ethical Standards. Mr. Yates was recognized as a bipartisan advocate for campaign finance reform as well as a proponent of stricter ethical standards for elected officials. During his years of public service, he had the vision and commitment to champion the benefits of public/private partnerships.

Whether as an elected representative, a leader in
international manufacturing or as president and chairman of family-owned business and industry, in each of his diverse endeavors, his focus was on improving the quality and performance of the world around him.

It is a fitting tribute to Charles Yates that this addition to the Family Service continuum be named in his honor!

Mental health is so much more than the elimination of troubling thoughts or behaviors. Good mental health professionals care for a whole person; a whole family; body and mind, heart and soul.

For the first time, at one location, a fully-integrated model of services combines individualized counseling and support, group-based interventions, education and training and case management services for children and families. The multi-faceted approach is designed to address each person’s behavioral health needs while empowering at-risk families with the skills needed to strengthen family cohesiveness.

For children living at home or in foster care, those facing challenges in school or at risk of hospitalization, the staff of Family Service provide opportunities to engage in healthy interactions, both physical and emotional in this therapeutic new setting.

The Yates Center for Children and Families provides a state-of-the-art backdrop for Family Service programs to offer coordinated, efficient and highly effective, outcomes-driven services.

From foster parent training to family counseling, from psychiatric assessment to therapeutic recreational activities, The Yates Center has opened a door to an improved level of service! The Center’s programs and services include:

First Step serves children ages 3 to 5 who are unable to function in a traditional pre-school setting or are at risk for out out-of-home placement. Staff works with children to improve and promote the growth of social skills, build positive self-esteem, reduce problematic behaviors and provide the support needed to transition children to traditional pre-school environments.

The Gertrude Einstein Center (GEC) serves children between the ages of 6 and 17. This intensive, short-term treatment program works with children who are experiencing psychiatric, educational and behavioral difficulties that significantly interfere with their lives at home and in school. Clinical goals are designed to improve each child’s behavior, increase self-esteem, develop emotional competence and ultimately maintain the family unit.

The Family Learning Center (FLC) is a specialized treatment program in which families who are experiencing psychiatric, educational and behavioral difficulties work together toward re-unification, in a supervised setting. Services are provided to parents and children at risk of abuse and neglect in an intensive, therapeutic environment. Through parent training, group and individual therapy, children’s treatment groups and supervised activities of daily living, children and parents develop the communication, behavioral, and conflict resolution skills needed to build and maintain healthy families.

Adding depth to this coordinated approach, Family Service’s Youth Case Management and Foster Care Services are also located at The Center.

Youth Case Management staff provides an additional level of service for young children and adolescents and their families by advocating on their behalf. Experienced case managers support transitional needs by linking children and parents to the appropriate community resources. Available 24 hours a day, case management staff work closely with a family to prevent, when possible, the psychiatric hospitalization of a child.
